Truro City are back in league action this afternoon (Saturday) when John Askey’s side travel to Aveley – 3.00pm.

The Tinners will be looking for a first win this calendar month after suffering two narrow league reverses, before then side exited the FA Cup at the hands of Brackley Town seven days ago.

This will be Truro’s fourth match on the road this term, with Askey’s charges securing a magnificent 2-1 win over Maidstone in August. They also travelled to Salisbury and picked up a point, which perhaps should have been three.

In City’s last away game, the side saw their colours lowered by Bath City. It was another game in which the visitors counted themselves as unfortunate to travel back to the Duchy, with nothing to show for their endeavours.

In Opposition

Aveley were, without doubt, the surprise package in National League South during 2023-24.

After gaining promotion from the Isthmian League, the Millers were written off by many as relegation candidates, but Danny Scopes, who has been in charge at Parkside since November 2021, led his side to the play-offs.

Despite falling at the first hurdle, after a 2-1 loss at Maidstone, it was still a brilliant achievement for Aveley to defy the odds.

This term, Scopes’ side have started slowly and like City, went out of the FA Cup last weekend. The Millers only win of the season so far came against pre-season promotion favourites Dorking, with Wanderers defeated 3-1 at Parkside.

Last Time We Met

Truro’s first trip to Parkside was during the 2023-24 campaign and the spoils were shared.

Harry Gibbs had given Aveley the lead and it looked like to points would be staying in Essex until Tyler Harvey (pictured below) popped up in the sixth minute of injury time, to tie the scores up at 1-1.

In the return fixture, which took place at City’s temporary home of Meadow Park, Gloucester and once more, the two teams couldn’t be separated.

Dan Sullivan gave Truro a ninth minute lead, but less than 90 seconds later, Aveley drew level when Frankie Terry, nephew of former England and Chelsea captain John, equalised from a corner.

Just before the turnaround, City were handed a numerical advantage when defender Jason Ring was shown a straight red card for hauling down Luther Munakandafa when he was in on goal.

Despite playing for over 45 minutes with an extra player, City couldn’t break down a stubborn visiting rearguard and the points were shared.

Sir John’s Thoughts

Looking back at Brackley: “I made changes from our previous game to have a look at one or two players and that didn’t help us, although it was something I had to do.

“For the players, they have to learn from performances like this because if they don’t we won’t be winning games anytime soon.”

On not scoring for three games: “It wasn’t (a concern) until Brackley because we created a lot of chances in the last two games.

“We didn’t create anything against Brackley and if we continue to play like that, it will be a concern.”
