For the second of three consecutive Saturday’s, Truro City are on the road with the Tinners travelling to South East London to face Welling United – 3.00pm.
John Askey’s side are unbeaten in sseven games and have picked up useful points at Slough Town and Farnborough in their last two matches away from the Truro City Stadium.
City kept their unbeaten run intact last time out on home soil with Billy Palfrey’s stoppage time leveller securing a share of the spoils against Chippenham Town. Matt McClure’s 84th minute penalty had given the Bluebirds the lead, in front of a stadium record crowd of 2,818.
But just at is looked like Chippenham would take all three points back to Wiltshire, Palfrey turned home Tom Harrison’s centre to send the home support into raptures.
In Opposition
Rod Stringer’s appointment to the Park View Road hot seat saw Welling comfortably secure their National League South status last term.
He replaced Danny Bloor in January, guiding the Wings to a run of just two defeats in 18 games as relegation seemed a real possibility before the colourful Stringer arrived in DA16.
With such a promising second half to the 2023-24 campaign, hopes were high that Welling would continue where they left off in April. And the early signs were promising with just one defeat in their opening four games – an impressive 4-1 home win over Farnborough the stand out early season result for Welling.
The Wings also defeated Torquay 2-0 in early September but since lowering the colours of Paul Wotton’s Gulls, Stringer’s charges have struggled.
After the high of a win over Torquay, it was back down to earth with a bump as the side suffered a 6-0 away reverse to Boreham Wood. Another win did not arrive until mid-October when strugglers Enfield and Aveley were both beaten 1-0 in consecutive matches.
That mini-revival was halted with a narrow 2-1 loss at Dorking and in the Wings’ last two games, they were beaten by Chippenham Town (4-0) and Eastbourne Borough (4-1).
Sir John’s Thoughts
“The performances that the players are putting in, you couldn’t ask any more of them,” Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall.
“We have got a very, very limited squad, limited resources, and it’s remarkable what’s happening at the football club.
“You can see off the pitch how the city’s getting behind us, and that showed with 2,800 on a Tuesday night when there’s Champions League football on.”
“I think everyone can see that there’s things are happening at the football club”
“We want to try and push this club as far as we can, the ultimate goal is obviously to try and get into league football.
“We’ll need a lot of resources to do that, but that’s the aim.
“Hopefully we can attract investment, and if we do that then the club’s only going to go one way, and that is forward.
“So we keep trying to improve the structure, but it is so important that everybody gets behind us, the whole of Cornwall really, because it would be fantastic if we could if we could do something this season.”
