Second placed Truro City host fellow promotion hopefuls Weston-super-Mare on Boxing Day, as the Tinners play their first festive fixture on Cornish soil since 2019.

Like Truro, the Seagulls have been one of the form sides so far in 2024-25 and only last month, topped the National League South pile before John Askey’s side took over.

A defeat at home to Maidstone United saw Truro drop to fourth but a last-gasp win on the road against St Albans City last time out sees the side just a place and a point behind leaders Torquay United.

After a drab half at Clarence Park, the deadlock was broken by the Saints four minutes into the second stanza through Zane Banton.

St Albans had chances to extend their advantage but City dug in and after Tyler Harvey hit the post, substitute Andrew Neal bagged his first of the campaign with an extravagant flicked finish.

It was all City, but the visitors couldn’t find the mark again until injury time when Will Dean turned brilliantly to fire low into the net to ensure all three points headed back west.

In Opposition

Weston travel to the TCS currently occupying sixth place in the National League South standings.

After winning promotion back to Step Two in 2023 – along with City – the Seagulls have consolidated after a four year sojourn in the Southern League.

Ironically, Weston were also relegated at the same time as City from the National League but under likeable boss Scott Bartlett, the Somerset outfit have developed into contenders for a first ever promotion into Step One.

But is isn’t just in the league that where Weston have caught the eye this season as in the Emirates FA Cup, they made it to the first round proper and were handed a plumb away tie at League One outfit Bristol Rovers.

A brilliant showing from Bartlett’s charges saw the game all-square after 90 minutes but with replay’s now scrapped  from round one onwards, the game went to extra-time as the Gas ran out 3-1 winners.

That loss didn’t appear to have a detrimental affect on Weston’s league form as they continued to set the pace before a 4-1 away reverse at Torquay on the same night City were thrashing Weymouth 4-1.

Knocked off top spot, Weston have picked up just two points from their next four games. Last time out, the side were sunk 1-0 at the Optima Stadium by Eastbourne Borough.

Last Time We Met

The two sides met three times in 23-24 – two league matches and one in the Emirates FA Cup.

After two wins for Weston – at Bolitho Park and at the Optima in the cup – the Tinners gained sweet revenge with a fine win in Somerset just before the festive period.

After falling behind in the opening stanza, City were superb after the turnaround and goals from Will Dean, Harvey Greenslade and Ryan Law opened up a 3-1 advantage.

Jacob Cane pulled another goal back for Scott Bartlett’s side six minutes from time but City held on to prevail 3-2.
