The Match

Truro City begin the new calendar year with a second visit of the campaign to Torquay United. This game is sold out for away supporters with all tickets issued. Please don not travel without a valid match ticket.

The two sides also met in November in the FA Trophy as the Gulls prevailed 1-0 thanks to Dan Hayfield’s fine second half free-kick.

However, the Tinners had a legitimate goal from Connor Riley-Lowe ruled out and also created further goalscoring opportunities, which saw home custodian James Hamon make several good saves.

Both teams were in action on Boxing Day with City sharing the spoils with Weston-super-Mare at the TCS. Reuben Reid’s goal put the Seagulls ahead after 36 minutes and it looked like all three points would head back to Somerset.

But Billy Palfrey had other ideas and his goal deep into stoppage time saw the game end 1-1.

It was a similar tale for Torquay as they travelled east on December 26 to face basement dwellers Weymouth. Under new boss Warren Feeney, the Terras twice pegged Torquay back. Will Jenkins-Davies gave Torquay the lead in first half stoppage time before Brandon Goodship levelled just shy of the hour mark.

Cody Cooke then restored the Gulls’ advantage but seven minutes from time, Goodship struck again to leave the final score at 2-2.

In Opposition

As previously mentioned, this is the second time in the past six weeks that City have locked horns with the Gulls.

The two sides were paired in the FA Trophy and after a narrow 1-0 victory, it was Torquay who booked their place in the next round. They subsequently defeated Horsham at Plainmoor and this Saturday, travel to divisional rivals Worthing in round four.

Torquay top the pile currently, but only just with the upper echelons of National League South congested in the extreme.

Just 10 points separate the Gulls at the top and Slough Town in 11th with Truro City currently occupying fourth. However, City know a win this afternoon and results elsewhere will see John Askey’s side look down at the rest come 5.00pm.

Askey will once again come up against the man he replaced in the Tinners’ hot seat this afternoon in Paul Wotton.

The Plymouth Argyle club legend spent five years in charge of Truro and led the side to promotion from the Southern League, via the play-offs, in 2022-23. And after a testing first Step Two campaign since 2019, which included a number of ground shares and a hectic end of season fixture schedule, City survived with ease and finished 16th.

That would be Wotton’s last act as Truro manager as he moved across the Tamar to Torquay, reuniting with his former Argyle manager Neil Warnock – pictured below.

Two of Wotton’s Truro squad from last season in the shape of James Hamon and Ed Palmer have followed Wotton to Plainmoor, whilst former City striker Cody Cooke moved to Torquay from Bath City during the close season.
