The Match

Truro City make history tomorrow, with the side playing their first game as a National League side.

Not only is it a first for the club, but for Cornish football too, as Truro become the first side from the Duchy to dine at non-League football’s top table.

The Tinners secured promotion to Step One in the most dramatic of circumstances, winning a remarkable six-way shoot-out on the final day of the 2024-25. A 5-2 win over St Albans City, in front a stadium record attendance at the TCS, ensured that John Askey’s side pipped Torquay United to the title by two goals.

Over the summer, City have kept the majority of last season’s squad in place as the club transition into full-time football, with only Rocky Neal departing and joining Plymouth Parkway.

Incomings have seen last terms loan pair Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain and Luke Jephcott make their moves to TR4 permanent. New faces have also arrived in the shape of midfielders Harry Kite, Lirak Hasani, Jake Taylor, Ben Starkie and Rekiel Pyke.

At the back, Max Kinsey has joined on a season-long loan from AFC Bournemouth and in the goalkeeping ranks, former Yeovil Town custodian Aidan Stone completes the City squad.

In Opposition

The Stones will be looking to returning boss Sam Cox as the man that can bring stability to Grosvenor Vale after a brush with relegation last term.

A 3-1 triumph at Halifax ensured that Wealdstone continue as a Step One club for a sixth consecutive season.

It could be argued, with some justification, that the mid-season departure of then manager Matt Taylor to divisional rivals Solihull Moors, contributed to last term’s struggles, with manager Neil Gibson (pictured below)only avoiding the drop on the final day.

Gibson and his assistant, the former Wales international striker Lee Jones, left Wealdstone in May, with the club turning to 34-year-old Cox, who, after playing close to 100 games for the Stones, is about to embark on his second spell in charge.

Cox’s maiden managerial stint holding the Ruslip reins was on an interim basis, but he led the team to safety on that occasion, with an impressive run of results.

Last Time We Met

The two sides last met in the 2018-19 season, one which saw City relegated to the Southern League whilst for Wealdstone, they made the play-offs after finishing seventh.

In the play-off quarter-finals, Wealdstone travelled to Bath and defeated the Romans after a 3-1 triumph. In the semi-finals they were once again on the road, losing 3-2 to eventual winners Woking.

City hosted Wealdstone in early February and in one of the first league matches played at Treyew Road that term, after an ill-fated groaundshare with Torquay, the visitors prevailed by the odd goal in three.

Tyler Harvey put City ahead in first half stoppage time but after the turnaround, goals from Christian Smith (penalty) and Danny Green saw more pressure heaped on boss Leigh Robinson, who shortly after would lose his job, replaced by Paul Wilkinson.

Robinson was appointed early in the campaign after Lee Hodges’ shock resignation and one of the new manager’s first games was away to Wealdstone. However, it was an unhappy trip to Grovesnor Vale as the hosts were comfortable 3-0 winners.

Bradley Hudson-Odoi gave Wealdstone the lead after 18 minutes and a second-half brace from Bradley Bubb meant City’s trip to North London was, ultimately, in vain.
