Match Overview

City will be looking to end their October league fixtures on a high note in TR4 when John Askey’s side host FC Halifax Town tomorrow (Saturday) – 3.00pm.

The side suffered penalty heartache in the FA Cup on Tuesday evening when they were defeated 5-3 on spot kicks after the match against AFC Totton ended all-square. Tony Lee put the Stags ahead after 14 minutes with Totton losing defender Joe Oastler to a second yellow card in first half stoppage time.

Lirak Hasani levelled for the Tinners just after the hour mark, but a go-ahead goal wasn’t forthcoming and the game went to extra-time.

Truro bombarded the Totton goal but couldn’t find a way through and in a penalty shoot-out, Truro’s first for 16 years in the FA Cup, Totton held their nerve to prevail.

Meanwhile, Halifax were not in midweek action as they eased aside National League North outfit Southport 3-1 on the road, to book their place in the first round proper. In Monday’s draw, the Shaymen were paired with SkyBet league 1 side Exeter City.

Opposition View

Shay boss Adam Lakeland says his side’s 3-1 away win over Southport in the FA Cup was ‘deserved’.

Striker Will Harris scored minutes into the game after a close-range finish.

Southport’s James Simms scored an almost instant equaliser after he fired home to give the home side the response they were looking for.

Josh Hmami gave Halifax the lead again in the 23rd minute when he met Angelo Capello’s cross and headed it into the bottom corner.

Just after half-time, they made it 3–1 when Harris got his second of the game, setting up a first round tie against SkyBet League 1 outfit Exeter City.

“We definitely deserved to win the game,” Lakeland told the Halifax Courier.

“First-half, it was just a proper cup tie wasn’t it, but I thought as soon as we had that two-goal advantage, we had control of the game and if anything, we probably should have scored another one and killed it off.

“It was always going to be a difficult game and a banana skin for us, and I’m just pleased we’ve managed to get the win and progress.”

Despite progressing comfortably, Lakeland felt his side’s first half showing could have been ‘tidier’, but the former KIngs Lynn chief felt that Halifax were much-improved after the turnaround.

“In the first-half, we were a bit loose with our play at times, potential transitions, we didn’t get the first or second pass right,” he added.

“That then meant they could pinch it off us and go and attack our final third, which resulted in a couple of shots Sam (Johnson, Halifax goalkeeper) had to save or set-plays, that they’re a threat from.

“We just needed to be a bit tidier in our play, and play with a bit more quality and control in the second-half, and I felt we did.

“But for as loose as I felt we were in that first-half at times, every time we got in the final third, we looked like we could score.

“But we’ve had that threat now for weeks, we look like we can create chances and score goals in every game, which is really important in games like this when you’re maybe not quite at your fluent best, but you’ve still got goals in you.

“Because if you haven’t, in games like that, you lose them.”

Tale of the Tape

This is the first time City have faced the Shaymen. The return fixture between the two sides will take place in West Yorkshire on February 14, 2026.

Connections

While the two clubs have never faced each other, they are linked by Santos Gaia. The Brazilian defender played for Halifax Town on loan the season before the club were reformed as FC Halifax Town.

Gaia then joined Truro City in the Southern League Premier in 2009, and was an ever-present for the first half of the 09-10 campaign before returning to Brazil partway through the term. Gaia made 22 appearances for The Tinners, scoring two goals, including one in a memorable 5-2 victory against Maidenhead United.
