Match Overview
This weekend, the Tinners welcome Sutton United to the Truro City Stadium in a crucial Enterprise National League clash, writes Ronan Tregoning.
Kick-off reverts to the usual 3.00pm slot this weekend, with John Askey’s charges hoping to turn recent struggles into momentum on home soil.
Truro have lost their last three league games without scoring, leaving them desperate to rediscover their attacking spark. A win would not only lift confidence but also help close the gap on their rivals. The U’s present a great opportunity to turn fortunes around with a poor away record, the only other team apart from City that has failed to win on their travels.
Since Chris Agutter took the reins, his side has picked up nine points from an available 18, more than double their tally from the previous 13 games under now departed chief Steve Morison. This strong form has lifted the South London side out of the drop zone, on goal difference, with the only direction seemingly being up.
Opposition View
Sutton found themselves in a perilous position, deep in the relegation zone, and opted to change former boss Steve Morison for Chris Agutter. (pictured below).
Agutter, who joined the club from Worthing in early October, has brought his reputation for playing possession-oriented football, with an emphasis on keeping the ball, building attacks, and maintaining a proactive yet consistent style, from Sussex.
The change in management has already begun to leave its mark. Sutton has begun to show signs of improved organisation and structure, particularly in midfield, while still struggling for consistency on the road. Their scoring record has been solid in patches, but defence has often been a challenge, making games tight affairs where a single goal can decide the outcome.
At the sharp end, Lewis Simper has been a standout performer. The 24-year-old winger has contributed 10 goal involvements this season, ten of which have come in the league, offering pace, creativity, and an eye for goal that Sutton will rely on to unlock stubborn defences.
Last Time We Met
Truro have faced Sutton on seven occasions and only once outside of league competition. The two sides met just in the FA Trophy, back in December 2017, when The U’s hosted the Tinners at Gander Green Lane. A tight cup tie was expected, and that’s exactly how it played out, with both teams cancelling each other out for long spells.
In the first half, neither side found a breakthrough despite Sutton seeing plenty of the ball but they struggled to unlock Truro’s back line, while City looked threatening on the counter through the industry of Niall Thompson (pictured below) and the hold-up play of Tyler Harvey. Chances were at a premium, and the scoreline of 0-0 reflected it at the interval.
As the second half wore on, it became clear that one moment of quality or one mistake would decide the contest. Truro held their shape well and frustrated the hosts, but Sutton’s substitutes eventually shifted the momentum. With the clock ticking into the final minutes, Craig Dundas, introduced just after the hour, popped up with the decisive moment, steering home an 89th-minute winner that broke Cornish resistance in the dying embers.
City pushed for an equaliser, but the late blow left too little time to respond. The match ended in a narrow 1–0 defeat, a harsh result given Truro’s discipline and effort across the entire 90 minutes.
It remains a meeting remembered not for a gulf in quality, but for how fine the margins were. A single late strike was all that separated the sides in a cagey, hard-fought trophy tie. Similar is expected at the TCS tomorrow.

Connections
Jordan Bentley came through the Plymouth Argyle youth system and made his first-team debut in the final league game of the 2015–16 season. Early in his senior career, he featured in an EFL Trophy match against Swansea City, which ended with an early bath before the first half was over.
In September 2017, Bentley joined Sutton United on loan, where he appeared five times in the league. Limited playing opportunities saw him recalled by Plymouth. Unfortunately, the bright talent’s progression was then disrupted in January 2018, when he suffered a broken leg in training, ruling him out for around six months.
After recovering, he joined Truro City on loan for the 2018–19 season, alongside fellow Argyle youth player and current Tinner Dan Rooney. He appeared nine times in the National League South, gaining valuable senior experience in a competitive environment.
However, persistent injuries eventually forced him to retire from professional football in May 2019 at just 20 years old. But he has continued to play at a semi-professional level, turning out for Tiverton Town, Plymouth Parkway, Helston Athletic, and currently St Blazey, where he recently scored a late equaliser against Barnstaple Town in September 2025.
Bentley’s journey highlights how youth prospects navigate between professional and non-league football, and how loan moves to clubs like Sutton United and Truro City provide vital experience, even when injuries alter long-term career paths.
