Truro City can confirm that Ben Adelsbury has retired from football and will be leaving the club after Friday’s game with Yeovil Town.
The 35-year-old multi-promotion winner with Truro, has made this decision to spend more time with his family.
Adelsbury, who was born in Cumbria but raised in the South West, has represented Truro on three separate occasions after coming through the ranks at Swansea City.
He has also enjoyed spells at Eastbourne Borough, Bath City and Taunton Town, also winning promotions whilst with the Peacocks.
Rejoining Truro for the 2022-23 campaign, Adelsbury was a mainstay of City’s Southern League play-off winning campaign, whilst also helping the side retain their Step Two status as a nomadic club.
And last term, the popular defender was a key part of City’s National League South title winning effort – both on the pitch and off it too.
“I have had some special times with some special people,” Adelsbury told trurocity.co.uk when asked to reflect on his career. “I arrived as a player and leave as a fan and it is amazing to see where the club was two or three years ago to where it finds itself now.
“I’d like to thank the fans for all their support during my times at the football club and within the playing group are some special characters. That’s what makes the football club a special place to be.”
With just one substitute appearance to his name this season and a successful career outside of football Adelsbury feels that now is the right time to bow out and to do so with Truro City playing at the club’s highest ever level.
“When the club transitioned to hybrid and part-time to full-time, at the start of this season, I was never going to be able to commit,” he explained.
“I have a young family and a career away from football so I’m very comfortable with the decision I’ve come to. It feels like the right time personally to spend a little more time with my family and to be a fan watching the boys.”
Asked to pin-point his favorite moments as a Truro player, it is unsurprising that two stick out for Adelsbury – the play-off final win over Bracknell Town in May 2023 and last year’s title clinching game against St Albans.
“The scenes we had in the last game of the season, being 3-0 up before Torquay had kicked off, were amazing,” he said.
“For me to be on the bench and play a small part last season was certainly a career highlight. We can go across the whole of last season and find special moments, but the celebrations at the end and the open-top bus parade we had in the following weeks were special times.
“When I came back this time I signed under Paul Wotton, we were ground-sharing with Plymouth Parkway and that was a difficult period for the club.
“We were playing in front of 70 fans but Paul was great as a manager and we had a great team ethos.
“We got promotion that season with more special moments, which included Connor Riley-Lowe popping up at the end to win the play-offs at Bracknell.”
With his boots almost hung up, Adelsbury is looking forward to spending time watching his son Theo’s career progress, as he just joined the academy set up at Torquay United.
There was also a tongue-in-cheek message for his wife Nia too.
“I get a lot of enjoyment watching Theo play and football is my DNA, so I’ve already told my wife not to sign me up for B&Q at 3.00pm on a Saturday because I will be getting my football fix somewhere.”
Everyone at Truro City would like to thank Ben for his service to the football club and he will always be welcome back at the TCS. We wish him well for the future.
