Boss John Askey says his Truro City side will remain grounded, despite their encouraging start to 2024-25.

The Tinners, who nervously looked over their shoulders towards the relegation trap door, for long spells last time, currently occupy seventh place in the National League South standings.

This weekend, the side host Hampton & Richmond Borough with Askey’s charges searching for a third consecutive win.

Last time out, City toppled the then league leaders Hemel Hempstead Town and before locking horns with the Tudors, defeated Aveley 2-1 on the road.

“Throughout any season, you will have ups and downs but at the moment, everyone is feeling good without getting too carried away,” Askey told trurocity.co.uk.

“But overall, we are in a good position and if we win our game in hand, we are level top of the table. Everything is going well, although it is still very early days.

“We have some tough fixtures coming up, so we will probably get a clearer indication of where we are in a few weeks’ time.

“Before the Hemel game, I was aware that they hadn’t lost, but I knew that if we were at it on the day, we would have more than enough to win. It was a good performance from start to finish even in those conditions.

“We dominated the game and they didn’t cause us any problems. We controlled the game and handled the conditions really well, because they could have played a huge part in the result.”

With City’s FA Cup involvement ending at the second qualifying round stage, this saw the side without a fixture last Saturday due to Boreham Wood’s involvement in domestic football’s most famous knock out competition. The Beavers also exited the cup last month, but they were in league action on October 12, with a home game against struggling St Albans, a match they lost 1-0.

Despite City’s positive result against Hemel, Askey, who won promotion from Step Two with York City in 2022, was glad of a week off, to rest players who have picked up niggles.

“We have had a week off and I would much rather be in our position, in giving lads who have been carrying injuries, some time to recover,” he added. “That means they will be fit for Hampton and although you want to be playing week in, week out when you are winning, it isn’t always the case.

“We showed against Hemel after having a week off, that we came back fresh and started the game really well. Hopefully that will be the case again, although Hampton will want to get back to winning ways.

“They were unlucky not to get something against St Albans and on another day, they would have. Overall, I don’t think there is anything much between the teams in this league from what I’ve seen.

“We know we will have to be at our very best to get the three points.”
