First plays second in National League South this evening with Truro City travelling to Cherrywood Road to face table toppers Farnborough.
The Tinners moved up to second in the standings with a comfortable 3-0 win over Hampton & Richmond at the TCS on Saturday. Tyler Harvey bagged a brace to take his individual tally to eight so far this campaign in just 11 games. The 29-year-old hit man also moved to the top of the National League South goalscoring charts.
Victory was completed by Connor Riley-Lowe, who scored his third of the season with 14 minutes left.
City’s last away match came on September 21 when the side faced Aveley at Parkside with Harvey bagging the winner after Jaze Kabia had opened the scoring. Charlee Hughes’ penalty had restored parity for the Millers, but City prevailed 2-1.
On the road so far this season, City have impressed with a record of two wins, a draw and just one defeat. Although on another day, the results against Salisbury (1-1) and Bath City (0-1) could and perhaps should have gone City’s way.
In Opposition
Farnborough are currently looking down on the rest in National League South with a fine run of five unbeaten matches, that has seen Spencer Day (pictured below) lead his side to the summit.
Last time out, the Yellows travelled to Chelmsford City and were 2-1 winners. All the goals came in a whirlwind opening 20 minutes which saw the visitors take the lead when Millar Matthews-Lewis scored his sixth of the season.
But the Clarets hit back almost instantly when Osman Foyo restored parity for Robbie Simpson’s troops. However, the teams didn’t remain level for long as Olly Pendelbury netted 17 minutes in, for what turned out to be the decisive goal.
Bits and Pieces
- Truro’s first ever meeting with Farnborough, in October 2011, saw City prevail 8-2 at Treyew Road. To this day, it is the Tinners’ record National League South win. Current assitant manager Stewart Yetton scored twice in that fixture.
- City’s last win at Farnborough came in August 2019. James Ward (pictured below) and Louis Rooney scored in a 2-0 win.
- Truro currently have the best goal difference in National League South – +11.
- Dan Lavercombe has conceded the joint fewest goals in NLS so far – 9.
- Tyler Harvey (8) is the league’s leading scorer.
Last Time We Met
City travelled to Farnborough in February and were edged out by the odd goal in five against the home side, who were chasing a play-off spot.
Ultimately, they missed out and finished eighth, but still had too much for Truro on a bitterly cold afternoon.
Aaron Kuhl, who has recently rejoined the Yellows from divisional rivals Dorking, put the hosts in front from the spot early on. City levelled before the break through Ed Palmer but in the second stanza, veteran midfielder Ricky Holmes restored Farnborough’s single goal advantage.
Back came City though as Adam Porter fired into the top corner to level things up at 2-2.
Just as it looked like the points would be shared, in the dying embers, Haddy Ghandour popped up to snatch victory for Farnborough.
Sir John’s Thoughts
“Farnborough will be one of the tougher teams in the league because they are top, so it won’t be easy.
“We will go there full of confidence and top playing second, there should be a decent crowd.
“It is good playing in games like this and we know we have just got to keep doing what we are doing. We have played well in every game bar the one in the FA Cup.
“Every league game we have been in and I think we could have won all of them. It will be tough on Tuesday, but it is a game we are looking forward to.
“October is a tough month because all the teams we are playing are all up there. If we can come out of October in and around the top, it would have been a good month.”
