Truro City begin a hectic spell of eight fixtures during November with an away trip to Slough Town.
John Askey’s side went through the whole of October undefeated and claimed 10 points from a maximum haul of 12 available.
The side picked up three impressive victories on home soil at the Truro City Stadium with Hemel Hempstead Town (1-0), Hampton & Richmond (3-0) and Tonbridge Angels (2-1), all having their colours lowered by Askey’s charges.
On the road, City travelled to current league leaders Farnborough and claimed a brilliant point after a 1-1 draw. Tyler Harvey opened the scoring after 12 minutes and despite being reduced to nine men, Truro kept the lead until eight minutes from time.
Taylor Clark’s deflected effort restored parity for the hosts and despite a staggering 12 minutes of stoppage time, the visitors heroically clung on for a share of the spoils.
In Opposition
A brilliant opening month to the season for Scott Davies’ side saw the Rebels pick up five wins from six games.
Slough’s only defeat came on the road to newly-promoted Salisbury with the highlight during August a 6-1 win away against Enfield Town, another of the league’s new boys.
Since then, the Rebels have only won once in the league – a 3-1 triumph over Tonbridge Angels, thus inflicting the Kent side’s first defeat of 2024-25.
Progress was made in the FA Cup with Chichester disposed of after a replay, before a comprehensive 3-0 victory at Chatham. But the cup dreams for Slough ended in the fourth qualifying round when the side were beaten 2-1 by Step One outfit Woking.
Last time out, Slough were defeated 4-3 at Worting in a thriller whilst seven days prior, at Arbour Park, the Rebels were held to a 2-2 draw by struggling St Albans City.
Bits & Pieces
- City’s last win at Slough came in December 2018. Dan Rooney scored both goals in a 2-1 win.
- The last game between the two sides on Cornish soil was in late April 2019. Truro were held to a 3-3 draw which saw the side relegated to Step Three. Tyler Harvey was one of Truro’s goalscorers.
- Truro have not tasted defeat in the league since September 7.
- Harvey is currently the league’s leading scorer with 10 goals.
- Slough have called Arbour Park home since 2016. Prior to that, the Rebels were nomadic for 13 years, after they left Wexham Park.
Last Time We Met
Truro City 3 (Neal 30 (pen), 65), Porter, 88)
Slough Town (Goddard, 84, George, 87)
Vanarama National League South – 29.03.24
Substitute Adam Porter scored a late winner for Truro to further pull the nomadic Cornish outfit clear of National League South’s relegation trap door.
Defeat for Slough means the Rebels’ play-off hopes are hanging by a thread as their winless run extended to five matches.
In a match played at Gloucester’s Meadow Park, recently announced as Truro’s latest temporary home until the end of the season, City custodian James Hamon was called into action first, denying both David Ogbanna and Josh Jackman.
Truro’s first sustained spell of pressure on the Slough goal, meanwhile, saw the hosts go ahead from the spot.
Dan Sullivan fired the ball in Scott Davies’ direction, it hit his hand and a penalty was awarded. Up stepped Andrew Neal to emphatically dispatch.
City held a slender lead at the break and after the turnaround, they went in search of an all-important second goal. It arrived with 25 minutes left when the ball found its way to Neal and he made no mistake again.
As time ticked down, it looked like Truro would hold on to claim the win with ease but Slough had other ideas.
Firstly, Johnny Goddard scored from the edge of the box before substitute Gabe George stabbed home.
But to complete a frantic final 10 minutes of normal time, Neal broke clear and hit the post, the rebound fell nicely to City’s pint-sized hitman, who in turn found Porter to score the winner.
