The Match
City’s second away trip of 2025 sees John Askey’s side travel to fellow high fliers Eastbourne Borough.
Sports are one of only six side’s to inflict defeat on the Tinners during the first half of 2024-25 with the East Sussex outfit prevailing 1-0 at the TCS in September.
It was a real smash and grab from the visitors who scored a 56th minute winner through striker Alfie Pavey with their only meaningful attack of the game.
At the other end, City had a glut of opportunities, struck the woodwork twice, had strong second half penalty half claims turned down while Sports’ custodian Finn Holter more than earned his corn, with a number of impressive saves.
Since that late summer clash in the Duchy, both sides have remained in and around the upper echelons of the National League South standings.
And City moved up to fourth in the table with an incredible 2-1 win over Hornchurch last time out.
The game, played in atrocious conditions, was dominated by City but it took until the 82nd minute for the deadlock to be broken when Billy Palfrey scored his third of the season.
But in a rare foray forward, the Urchins seemingly broke City hearts when Darren McQueen levelled in the dying embers. However, City came again and almost straight from the restart, Andrew Neal arrived at the back post to fire home to win the game for Askey’s charges.
In Opposition
Along with Torquay United, the only other unbeaten side on their own patch this season are Eastbourne Borough.
It is a stark contrast for Sports compared to their 2023-24 campaign, in which they battled relegation and before the appointment of Adam Murray, looked certain to drop into the Isthmian League.
This term, however, Sports have been battling at the other end of the table, alongside City and they haven’t tasted defeat since losing 3-1 away to Maidstone late in November.
Eastbourne have not conceded a goal for four games – winning two and drawing two.
Last time out, Sports defeated struggling St Albans City 1-0 thanks to a single strike from Courtney Clarke, which kept Eastbourne very much in the play-off picture.
