Match Overview
After close to four years away from home, Truro and the Duchy, the Tinners are finally back on home soil and face Dorking Wanderers in National League South – 3.00pm.
It is not only a new era off the pitch as fans take in the new Truro City Stadium, but on the pitch too, a new manager will lead the Tinners.
John Askey replaced Paul Wotton in early June and after winning promotion at both Step Two (York City) and Macclesfield Town (Step One), hopes are high that Truro can build on last year’s season of consolidation, after survival was secured despite playing 10 games in 20 days at the term’s end.
Pre-season has seen City play five games and four victories were secured over Torpoint Athletic, Willand Rovers, Tiverton Town and Falmouth Town. The side’s only defeat came last season as they were edged out 2-1 by Gloucester City.
Askey has kept the bulk of last season’s squad, whilst losing the services of Ed Palmer and James Hamon. But reinforcements have been plentiful as the season opener approached.
Dan Lavercombe, Tylor Love-Holmes, Seidou Sanogo, Yassine En-Neyah and Jaze Kabia have joined the club permanently. There have also been two loan recruits in the shape of Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain and Tavonga Kuleya.
Our Opponents
Dorking become the Tinners’ first ever opponents at the Truro City Stadium as Marc White’s team attempt to bounce back to the National League after suffering relegation last term.
Wanderers have risen through the non-league pyramid at breakneck speed and were only formed for the 2007-08 campaign, when they were playing in Sussex County Division Three.
By 2015, they had made it to the Isthmian League and after winning the Premier Division in 2018-19, were promoted to National League South.
They finished seventh in the first covid-19 affected season and after the following year (20-21), was abandoned because of the pandemic, they secured promotion to Step One in the first full season after coronavirus.
Finishing as runners-up to champions Maidstone United, Wanderers were promoted via the play-offs – defeating Oxford City 3-0 in the last four before lowering the colours of Ebsfleet 3-2 in the final.
White led his side to a solid 16th placed finish in their first National League season but last year, 23-24, the side struggled, finished 23rd and suffered a first relegation in the club’s history.
Head to Head
This is the first ever meeting between Truro City and Dorking Wanderers.
Sir John’s Thoughts
City boss John Askey, speaking to the club’s media team ahead of this game:
It is a very proud moment for me to lead the side in its first game at the new stadium as we take on Dorking Wanderers.
It is really important that we get off to a good start in front of our own supporters and I know that all the players and coaching staff are looking forward to it.
The pitch is immaculate and the stadium has really come together in the past few weeks. Hopefully the lads will respond well to their new surroundings whilst giving everyone something to shout and about and the fans will all go home happy.
